'Greenberg'

'Greenberg' (R) ***

Written and Directed by Noah Baumbach
Starring: Ben Stiller, Greta Gerwig, Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mark Duplass

Ben Stiller is best known for goofy comedies and big Hollywood blockbusters like the "Night at the Museum" movies. He has made some classics like "Tropic Thunder" and unique misfires like "Zoolander". He has never been known for being deep or serious and that is not such a bad thing. We all know though that every actor or movie star wants to show they can act and a serious vehicle is what can help do that. Ben Stiller is smart and he can act. Just watch the old television classic "The Ben Stiller Show" which is one of the best skit shows ever on television. His mastery of different characters on that show displayed the sheer talent and brilliance of his acting in comedy. Robin Williams and Jim Carrey have gone the serious actor route very well and now you can add Ben Stiller. His performance in "Greenberg" is the best of his career so far. This is not a lovable character Stiller is playing here and this will make "Greenberg" one of those movies that people either like or hate. I love the performances and I like the message and characters of this challenging drama. Time will tell if I truly love this movie for I think on a second viewing I might like it much more. I just love it for the fact that it is tough to embrace and that others will hate it. When it comes to movies I always seem to go against popular opinion a lot. I actually identified with the main character more than I would be willing to admit.

Ben Stiller plays Roger Greenberg who has just been released from a mental institution for a nervous breakdown. He leaves his home in New York to go to Los Angeles to house sit for his brother. Greenberg is a very depressed, cranky and introverted man who just doesn't like people much and sees life as hopeless. Then he meets his brother's assistant and house keeper Florence played by newcomer Greta Gerwig. Gerwig has been in a few small movies including last year's horror masterpiece "The House of the Devil". She is not a conventional beauty but in certain shots she does look very beautiful. She is lanky, awkward in her body movements and she either has moments where she is very expressive and moments where she fumbles her words and tries to swallow them back for fear of not sounding right. Gerwig is very good here playing this shy but pleasant woman who has to deal with a lost Greenberg. Stiller and Gerwig work well off of each other. They create two people who start an unusual relationship but turn out to be right for each other. This movie is not always a happy movie though it has a lot of funny moments. So if you want a joyous and upbeat movie you might hate this movie. I identified with the characters and I loved following them. All movies can not be all sunny and fun because in reality there are a lot of sad and unsure people in this World. "Greenberg" depicts that view well in a story that in time grew on me and got me emotionally involved. I like when actors show us a side we haven't seen before. I also like seeing a very good actress who shows that actresses don't all have to look like Megan Fox or Sandra Bullock. This felt like a movie about real people in a sad World who find out they need someone and that it can sometimes be a person right under your nose. This is a well written movie that just might become more of a classic in time with repeat viewings.

'Hot Tub Time Machine'

'Hot Tub Time Machine' (R) ***

Writers: Josh Heald, Sean Anders and John Morris
Director: Steve Pink
Starring: John Cusack, Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry, Clark Duke, Chevy Chase, Lizzy Kaplan, Crispin Glover, Collette Wolfe

The makers of "Hot Tub Time Machine" know what they are doing and that is how to make a movie live up to it's title. You expect something really dumb but it takes skill to make a dumb, funny movie. Actually I think "Hot Tub Time Machine" is pretty smart and well written. It is not as laugh out loud funny as say a "Superbad" or a "Hangover" but it is actually smarter than "The Hangover". The movie has characters we like and we actually care about their Hot Tub Time Machine travel. John Cusack and director Steve Pink are masters at this kind of raunchy comedy that always has heart and not the cloying and annoying kind of heart. "Grosse Pointe Blank" and "High Fidelity" are two of those movies and they have never made a weak or bad movie. They don't force the jokes but create them out of very funny characters and actors. The movie is sort of explained by the title and is sort of a raunchy "Back to the Future" type story. The four main characters are pretty much losers in their life now and the Hot Tub time travel might help them get to winner status. The four main characters are played by four very talented actors. They are Cusack who has nailed down the ordinary but very smart and gentle character down pat. There are two new promising and funny actors who by these performances will probably be seen in a lot of movies for now on. They are Craig Robinson from "The Office" and a very funny and scene stealing Rob Corddry from "The John Stewart Show". The cast is rounded out by Clark Duke who has been very good in some bad movies. There is a funny, comeback appearance by Chevy Chase who hasn't been funny in a movie for a while now. There is also a hilarious and smart bit involving Crispin Glover. Glover was in "Back to the Future" and his casting is ingenious. Also there are two appealing performances by two actresses in Lizzy Kaplan and Collette Wolfe. The look and feel of the 80's are pretty spot on and remind us how cheesy and bad the 80's were. So the movie looks funny, has some brilliant moments and always keeps you smiling. It is amazing how someone like John Cusack, who is always very low key, can make us follow him anywhere and Rob Corddry is very funny here. "Hot Tub Time Machine" delivers what you expect it to and it does it well.

'Movies on DVD': 'The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee', 'Fame' and 'Night at the Museum 2'

'Movies on DVD'

'Fame' (PG) (09) **

Writer: Allison Burnett based on 1980 movie by Christopher Gore
Director: Kevin Tancharoen
Starring: Naturi Naughton, Kay Panabaker, Bebe Neuwirth, Megan Mullally, Kelsey Grammer, Charles S. Dutton

The 1980 movie 'Fame' was not a great movie but very entertaining and full of personality. In comparison, the 2009 reboot is safe, lifeless and with no personality. I stared at the walls a lot watching this DVD and I can't remember one character or piece of music. There is no Leon, Barry Miller, Irene Cara or Paul McCrane (ER) to care about. The teachers played by great character actors like Grammer, Dutton and Mullally and the magnificent Bebe Neuwirth have really nothing to do and no big scenes which leaves us with a bunch of boring boys. The only actors I mention in the cast list are two girls because at least Danielle's younger sister Kay Panabaker registers, the boys suck.

'The Private Lives of Pippa Lee' (R) **1/2

Writer and Director: Rebecca Miller
Starring: Robin Wright Penn, Alan Arkin, Maria Bello, Keanu Reeves, Blake Lively, Mike Binder, Julianne Moore, Shirley Knight, Zoe Kazan, Monica Belucchi

Rebecca Miller has a good feel for writing women empowerment movies like "Personal Velocity" but here she creates her weakest story. The movie is still interesting for the performance of Robin Wright Penn, one of my favorite actresses. There is also a very good performance by Blake Lively from "Gossip Girl", she could become a breakout actress. The movie deals with the Penn character going through a mid life crisis in her marriage to an older man played by Alan Arkin. The movie has interesting parts that conclude in a lackluster ending. There really is no force behind the story and the screenplay wavers.

'Night at the Museum 2: The Battle of the Smithsonian" (09) (PG) ***

Writers: Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon
Director: Shawn Levy
Starring: Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Bill Hader, Eugene Levy, Hank Azaria, Steve Coogan, Ricky Gervais, Christopher Guest

I love it when a sequel is better than the original especially if I dislike the first one. The first "Night at the Museum" was a disappointment, too family friendly and not clever enough. That movie had too many sappy my Dad doesn't have time for me and doesn't love me moments. Also what the heck are Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney doing slumming. The second movie has more brains, an easy going and more fun feel than the first. It also has a great performance by Amy Adams as Amelia Earhart. She is a total delight reminding me of her work in "Enchanted". Her chemistry and play with Ben Stiller is great and I wanted them to get together for a strange reason. Hank Azaria is good and the bit with the Einsteins voiced by Eugene Levy made me laugh out loud. This was a fun movie and not dull and labored like the first movie. I love it when movie makers improve on their mistakes!

'The Runaways'

'The Runaways' (R) ****

Writer and Director: Floria Sigismondi
Based on book "Neon Angel" By Cherie Curie
Starring: Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Michael Shannon, Tatum O'Neal, Scout Taylor-Compton, Stella Maeve

I had been excited to see "The Runaways" for a long time but I didn't expect to learn a lot of rock n'roll history and be blown away! This is one of my favorite music bio films and belongs in the "Coal Miner's Daughter", "Buddy Holly Story" field of rock masterpieces. Those expecting a safe, ordinary and sanitized look at the career of Joan Jett might find a nice surprise here. This is really about the true lead singer of "The Runaways" Cherie Curie and her relationship with Jett, Curie's sister and the band's manager Kim Fowley. Kim Fowley is played by Chicago actor Michael Shannon in a crazy and magnificent performance. He chews some scenery but he is hilarious and intense. Those who think Kristen Stewart is limited as an actress will be blown away by her performance here. This portrayal could come off like Leather Tuscadero in "Happy Days" but Stewart here gives a breakout, star making performance. She disappears into her character and there is no trace of Stewart at any point. The film though belongs to Dakota Fanning who now has grown up into a powerful adult actress. Her performance is breathtaking, flawless and completely brave. This is an award caliber performance that is so good that it is even too real and good enough for the Oscars. I was riveted watching this movie from the first frame to the last. The performances are perfection, the recreation of the 70's is flawless, the music is fantastic and Fanning even sings exactly like Curie did. I also learned a lot about a band I didn't know anything about and an artist I was fascinated with when I was 12 years old

That artist is Cherie Curie who I had a big crush on back when I saw the Jodie Foster movie "Foxes" in 1980. That movie somehow got to me and besides Foster I was really into Cherie Curie's performance. Until a few weeks ago I never knew that Curie was the lead singer of "The Runaways" (also didn't know guitar goddess Lita Ford was in the band either). I have seen "Foxes" multiple times and I know that Fanning captures Curie better than most actors have captured a true rock star. This is up there with Val Kilmer, Resse Witherspoon, Sissy Spacek and Gary Busey and their portrayls of real music stars. I did not see this coming from Fanning and she is simply amazing in this movie. You actually might not recognize her at first and that is how great she is. Also Michael Shannon is awesome and proving he is one of our best unknown actors we have. Kristen Stewart again has gotten unfairly criticized for her work being one note but her naysayers will see this performance and eat their words. With this performance she proves she could be one of our finest actresses and dissapears into her character. This movie made me want to own the soundtrack, take someone else with me and see it again and I didn't want it to end, I wanted to see more. That is the highest compliment I can give a movie. I also want to see "Foxes" again just to see the real Curie again and to see how Fanning nailed her perfectly. Dakota Fanning gives one of the best performances of the year so far and "The Runaways" is a small masterpiece.

P.S. After seeing "the Runaways" and knowing that the Oscars will be too stupid to notice Fanning's and Shannon's performances I have come up with new awards I will give out. They are called the Snavely's and they will be given to the best actors and movies that slipped by the Academy Awards at the end of the year. So far Shannon and Fanning are in the running and so is "The Runaways" and "The Crazies".

'The Bounty Hunter'

'The Bounty Hunter' (PG-13) *1/2

Writer: Sarah Thorp
Director: Andy Tennant
Starring: Gerard Butler, Jennifer Aniston, Cathy Moriarty, Jeff Garlin, Jason Dudeikis, Christine Baranski,

I thought about "Romancing the Stone" and "Midnight Run" a lot during the generically titled "The Bounty Hunter". Heck I even thought about what I was going to have for dinner, what laundry I had left to do and how much snow will we get tomorrow? If you haven't guessed yet "The Bounty Hunter" is one of the dullest, stupidest and forced movies I have seen. Straight to DVD movies with no name stars are classics compared to this. This a joyless exercise that has not one laugh, no chemistry between it's two leads and action scenes that are boring. How can you make an action, romantic thriller boring? "The Bounty Hunter" does that and it wastes a lot of talent doing it. If this movie doesn't make a lot of money it could ruin Aniston's career. The movie is about a newspaper reporter played by Aniston who breaks a murder suicide case dealing with dirty cops. She skips bail on a case where she bumped into an officer and she is now chased by an ex-cop bounty hunter who happens to be her ex-husband. Gerard does his best with what he has as the bounty hunter but I kept thinking of Deniro in "Midnight Run" and sorry Butler fails to convince. This is not a realistic movie because for one thing why would a reporter wear a tight dress and high heels out on the road and how can she run fast in those heels? Can any woman out there tell me if that is possible? I am not asking for realism but something exciting could have happened. I have seen shoot outs and car chases like this before but this is a hack job. I also think Aniston's and Butler's chemistry is weak. This is a violent movie in parts and then in some parts it is a screwball comedy. The styles don't mesh and the movie has zero romance and not one laugh. I didn't even chuckle once or smile, I just yawned. Great character actors like Carol Kane, Jeff Garlin and Cathy Moriarty are wasted and there are a few scenes that are blatantly ripped off from "Midnight Run". Then there is "Saturday Night Live's Jason Sudeikis who seems to be doing a SNL skit and feels like he is in another movie. He is very unfunny, the movie is very stupid, Aniston is miscast and I almost fell asleep. You should order a extra large coke if you go see this.

'The Yellow Handkerchief'

'The Yellow Handkerchief' (R) ***

Writer: Erin Dignam
Director: Udayan Prasad
Starring: William Hurt, Kristen Stewart, Eddie Redmayne, Maria Bello

With the passing years we forget how great an actor William Hurt is. He has lately been doing small roles in good independent films. His bravura and shockingly fierce performance in "A History of Violence" was priceless. I think Kristen Stewart has been given a bad rap lately as being a brooding and downbeat actress. There is a confidence and intelligence there that reminds me of a young Jodie Foster. It isn't her fault she is best known for her work in the preening and horrible "Twilight" movies. "The Yellow Handkerchief" tells a slow but beautiful and rewarding story and character study. It is not a totally powerful movie but I liked it and watching William Hurt act was a great pleasure. He does most of his acting with his eyes and that is sometimes one of the greatest tools an actor can convey. The story involves an ex-convict just released from prison who embarks on a road trip with a teenage loner and a young man who seems slow and strange. The movie also flashbacks to the convict and his love affair and marriage to a local woman. This was the relationship he had before he was sent to prison. What happened to get him in there is told slowly by him to his two travel companions. This movie has the same road movie cliches I have seen before but cliches can always be trumped by strong things. One of those is the acting by Hurt, Stewart, Maria Bello as the woman and newcomer Eddie Redmayne as the young man. Though Hurt comes off the best simply because he is one of our finest actors and it is a pure acting class to see him work. It is a quietly powerful performance. He is mysterious enough without seeming aloof to us and you can see why Hurt is considered one of our best actors ever. The other strength is the breathtaking cinematography by veteran genius Chris Menges. The movie takes place in Louisiana post Katrina and the movie beautifully captures the aftermath mixed with great shots of the outdoors. "The Yellow Handkerchief" is a worthwhile experience just to see great acting and if you are patient you will be rewarded with a moving story.

'Growing Up At The Movies: 1967-'

'Growing Up At The Movies'

As I am starting to write my book on growing up at the movies I decided to share my favorite movies of all time. By creating this site I for one was looking to get my reviews out there so I could get a job. The strongest reason though was to share my love of movies and what movies shaped my creativity and influences. There are a few things I realized while compiling these lists and one of those was that I need to see more older movies. I am proud though of all the movies I have seen since I was born and I have been reviewing movies since eighth grade. My most impactful influences were of course Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel. I also learned that everyone has an opinion and that the main feeling you should get watching a favorite movie is just pure joy. Your favorite movie might not be someone else's and I have loved a lot of movies that others have hated or haven't seen. I hope that you can look at these and find a new favorite for yourself. You might find something from a favorite actor or actress you have never seen. This is just an outline and I will not be describing each movie here. I just wanted to share my favorites. I will start out by giving you movies pre 1967 that are my favorites and then list my favorites from each year of my movie defining years. I will also mention movies I have seen over and over that haven't made my top ten lists but I love just as much. Some might also be movies that are guilty pleasures or cult type films. I wanted to focus more on movies than actors and directors but you will see a pattern going on here and will figure out who my favorite people in movies are. There will be a more detailed look at my movie defining years when I complete my full book but this is a teaser of what's to come.

Those are the movies that I love and that I could watch over and over but they just missed my top ten. Next I have listed my favorite movies of each year. Some early years don't have ten movies for I have more old movies to see. Writing my book can't really be finished with this much more to see so I wanted to publish a teaser. Soon I will have my 100 best movies of the 70's, 80's and the 90's and a detailed explannation of each movie and why they made my Top 100. There are some years where I have more than ten because it was just too hard to cut it off so here we go.

Those are my favorite movies of every year from the year I was conceived till now. I know I have left out movies that others consider their favorites. Everyone loves something different and some people might hate some of my choices. That is what is wonderful about the movies that we each love different types of movies. It wouldn't be fun if we liked the same things. So I hope there are some movies here that you haven't seen but could become a movie you love that you didn't know existed. That is what I am mainly here for, to reccomend to you something new and great to experience. So very soon I will have my best of the decades including my top 100 for the 80's and the 90's. Now I have to go and discover new classics and new favorites.
